Like a regular manual transmission, an AMT has gears arrayed on parallel shafts and a clutch or clutches in the case of a DCT that disengages the transmission from the engine while shifts to another pair of gears are carried out. However, gear changes are not accomplished by the driver operating a clutch pedal and an H-pattern shift lever. They are automated. There is no clutch pedal, and gear shifting is carried out through actuators that can be triggered automatically in a D mode or manually in M mode when a driver tugs on a shift lever or flicks steering-mounted shift paddles.
Also, these are sequential shifts, which means a straight up or down gear progression, like on a motorcycle. Note: the presence of shift paddles or manual modes is not a good way to tell if you have an AMT.
Some AMT-equipped cars lack a manual shift mode and masquerade full time as regular automatic transmissions. Conversely, many regular automatics have a manual mode or shift paddles. Porsche's PDK, or Porsche Doppelkupplungsgetriebeis a dual-clutch transmission as you'd know if you can read German.
The blue diagram shows first gear engaged by one clutch and the green diagram shows second gear engaged by another. There can be drawbacks to DCTs, especially if such a transmission is fitted to a family car that has no sporting pretenses. DCTs tend to exhibit a lurching drivability character when motoring at low speeds in parking lots, especially when starting out in first or reverse. Since you're not letting it out yourself, the pause is more noticeable and, likely, annoying.
These drivability issues have increasingly been smoothed out over the years to the point that you may not even notice the difference, or at least, care about it. Yet, Ford is still dealing with the fallout from the "PowerShift" transmission fitted to the Fiesta and Focus and marketed as an automatic. This was in fact a DCT that lacked any sort of manual shift mode.
That might have been OK if being different was its only issue, but there were also significant mechanical problems. The type of shifter does not indicate what type of transmission a car has.
All of these operate in different way, yet all control a dual-clutch transmission. The first automated manual transmissions had a single clutch and mostly appeared as the automatic transmission option on high-powered sports cars BMW's SMG, for instance, or Audi's R tronic. While they achieved their performance goals, the lurching drivability at low speeds was notorious, while gear changes could seem slow. This allows a DCT to pre-load the next gear to execute nearly instantaneous gear changes as one clutch disengages the current gear mere milliseconds before the other one engages the next gear.
As you might imagine, a certain amount of powertrain monitoring must be devoted to predicting what the driver will do next so the system can properly prepare for an upchange or a downchange.
The number of clutches is not the only variation that exists within the AMT universe. Wet clutches immersed in oil are better able to deal with heat than dry clutches, and multiple plates are better able to handle higher torque loads and repeated launch control starts.

In principle, the DCT behaves just like a standard manual transmission: It's got input and auxiliary shafts to house gears, synchronizers and a clutch. What it doesn't have is a clutch pedal, because computers, solenoids and hydraulics do the actual shifting.
Even without a clutch pedal, the driver can still "tell" the computer when to take action through paddles, buttons or a gearshift. Driver experience, then, is just one of the many advantages of a DCT. With upshifts taking a mere 8 milliseconds, many feel that the DCT offers the most dynamic acceleration of any vehicle on the market.
It certainly offers smooth acceleration by eliminating the shift shock that accompanies gearshifts in manual transmissions and even some automatics.
Best of all, it affords drivers the luxury of choosing whether they prefer to control the shifting or let the computer do all of the work. Perhaps the most compelling advantage of a DCT is improved fuel economy. Because power flow from the engine to the transmission is not interrupted, fuel efficiency increases dramatically.
Some experts say that a six-speed DCT can deliver up to a 10 percent increase in relative fuel efficiency when compared to a conventional five-speed automatic. Many car manufacturers are interested in DCT technology.
However, some automakers are wary of the additional costs associated with modifying production lines to accommodate a new type of transmission. This could initially drive up the costs of cars outfitted with DCTs, which might discourage cost-conscious consumers. In addition, manufacturers are already investing heavily in alternate transmission technologies. One of the most notable is the continuously variable transmissionor CVT. A CVT is a type of automatic transmission that uses a moving pulley system and a belt or chain to infinitely adjust the gear ratio across a wide range.
CVTs also reduce shift shock and increase fuel efficiency significantly. But CVTs can't handle the high torque demands of performance cars. DCTs don't have such issues and are ideal for high-performance vehicles. In Europe, where manual transmissions are preferred because of their performance and fuel efficiency, some predict that DCTs will capture 25 percent of the market.

The idea is to give customers the ability to creep along in automatic mode, much like they would with a standard torque-converter automatic, or shift gears manually if they so choose.
The advantages of a DCT are shift times, fuel economy and ease of operation. This makes high-performance cars significantly faster, especially when the difference in lap times or quarter mile times can come down to milliseconds. Modern day DCTs are also far more fuel efficient than manual or standard automatic gearboxes.
And they offer a much simpler experience. This is why automakers are using them instead of manuals, as customers paying incredible amounts of money for performance cars want the easiest and fastest option.
Seems perfect, right? Well, not exactly. There are a couple of drawbacks to the dual clutch transmission. DCTs are very heavy, in comparison to their alternatives, and are more difficult to package properly, due to their large size.
The weight is easily offset by the performance gained, but that still leaves them difficult to package. DCTs are also very expensive. A DCT transmission option for nearly any car is a couple of thousand dollars, so a customer must really want one in their car to shell out the clams for one. Manual transmissions have long been the enthusiasts weapon of choice.
Despite the manual control and rapid shift times of a DCT, the manual gearbox is still the more fun and most engaging to drive. So the DCT is an interesting transmission choice.
On one hand, they offer incredible performance, ease of use and better fuel economy. And anything in between is simply your preference.
